The body of Pheretima aspergillum (E. Perrier) (Fam. Megascolecidae). Known as 'Guang dilong' (Guangdong Earthworm).

Distribution:
Mainly in Chinese provinces such as Guangdong, Guangxi and Fujian.

Harvest & Processing:
Gather earthworms from spring to autumn; promptly cut open abdomen and remove organs, soil and sand; wash clean; dry under the sun or at low temperatures.

Description:
Long thin strip, slightly curled at margin. With somites down the whole length; dorsal side reddish-brown to purplish-grey, ventral side light yellowish-brown; the 14th to the 16th somites are slightly more shiny and contain the clitellum. Anterior end slightly pointed, caudal end obtuse, setae rings stiff and coarse. Male gonopore located on ventral side at the 18th segment as a small protruding aperture in the setae ring; rim surrounded by several shallow skin folds; setae ring at the inner side of gonopor bulges thicker; in front of gonopore are rows of papillules, 10-20 on either side. Light in weight; slightly coriaceous (leathery), does not break easily. Odour: fishy; taste: slightly salty.

Indications:
1. Convulsion, dizziness, headache, epilepsy and insanity
2. Asthma
3. Rheumatism, hemiplegia after stroke
4. Dysuria, retention of urine
5. Hypertension.

Chemical Composition:
Contains hemolysing lumbritin and amino acids.

Note:
According to C.P., also used for medicinal purposes, and customarily called ' Hudilong' (Shanghai Earthworm), is the body of P. vulgaris Chen, of P. guillelmi Michaelsen and of P. pectinifera Michaelsen.
